Guided tour of Freetown’s historical landmarks, museums, and heritage sites. Discover the settlement of freed slaves and the country’s abolition history. Saint Maroon Church

Nestled between lush green hills and the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Freetown is a city that lives up to its name, a place of freedom, resilience, and vibrant life. Founded in 1787 by freed Africans returning from Britain, North America, and the Caribbean, Freetown is more than the capital of Sierra Leone; it’s the beating heart of the nation’s story.

A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE . Deep in southern Sierra Leone, where the Moa River winds through thick rainforest, lies Tiwai Island a place of rare beauty and living mystery. “Tiwai,” meaning big island in Mende, is one of the country’s greatest treasures, home to some of West Africa’s most remarkable wildlife and one of the last remaining fragments of pristine rainforest.

High in the green hills just outside Freetown lies one of Sierra Leone’s most inspiring places, Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Surrounded by the dense forests of the Western Area Peninsula National Park, the sanctuary is more than a wildlife site. It’s a story of care, courage, and coexistence.
Founded in 1995 by conservationist Bala Amarasekaran, Tacugama began with a single rescued chimpanzee. Today, it’s home to over a hundred chimps, each with their own story, some orphaned by poaching, others saved from captivity. Here, they find safety, companionship, and a second chance at life.

Just a short drive down the Peninsula from Freetown lies Tokeh Beach, one of Sierra Leone’s most breathtaking coastal gems. Stretching for miles, this wide arc of golden sand meets crystal-clear blue water, framed by green hills that seem to guard the bay. The moment you arrive, the calmness of the place settles over you, the sound of waves, the soft breeze, and the feeling that time has slowed down.
Tokeh has long been loved for its natural beauty and laid-back charm. In the 1960s and 70s, it was a favourite getaway for visitors from around the world. Today, it still holds that timeless magic, quiet, unspoiled, and peaceful. The beach is perfect for long walks, swimming, or simply sitting barefoot in the sand, watching the horizon melt into the sea.

Few places capture the quiet beauty of Sierra Leone like River Number 2 Beach. About an hour’s drive from Freetown along the scenic Peninsula Road, this stretch of coastline feels like a postcard come to life soft white sand, turquoise waves, and green mountains rising gently in the distance.
The name comes from the crystal-clear river that flows straight into the Atlantic, creating a stunning meeting point of fresh and salt water. It’s one of those rare places where you can swim in the cool river, then step a few feet forward into the warm ocean. The water sparkles under the sun, and the air carries the easy rhythm of island life..

Just off the coast of the Western Peninsula, a short boat ride from Kent Village lies one of Sierra Leone’s most peaceful treasures. Banana Island. A cluster of three small islands, Dublin, Ricketts, and Mes-Meheux.
Banana Island blends unspoiled natural beauty with echoes of history, offering visitors a perfect mix of reflection, adventure, and rest.
As you approach by boat, you’re greeted by turquoise waters, waving palm trees, and the soft rhythm of island life. The sound of waves against the rocks feels like a welcome song. Beneath this calm surface, however, lies a deep story.
Banana Island was once home to freed slaves, fishermen, and settlers who built a small but vibrant community that still stands today. Walking through Dublin village, you’ll see traces of that past old stone walls, a small church, and smiling locals who are proud to share their heritage.
The island is also a paradise for nature lovers. You can hike through lush tropical forest, snorkel among colourful fish and coral reefs, or simply relax on the golden beaches. Fresh seafood is served straight from the ocean, and evenings often end with bonfires, music, and stories under the stars.
